Guardian of Dog Lost to Rimadyl Replies to srdogs Readers
| On August 13, 2001, we received an E-mail message from Tom Adams. He wrote to describe the heartbreaking loss of his beloved dog "Betsy," a Black Lab, to side effects of Rimadyl. Late in October, he wrote again: Dear Senior Dogs, Thank you again for posting my story about Betsy. When I contacted Pfizer, I told them that I had posted my story with you and had prepared a 25-page document based on the research I had done on the Internet. I also told them that I had received numerous responses from your readers who had similiar experiences. One of Pfizer's veterinarians called to tell me that Pfizer would cover the bill for Betsy's treatment. I also noticed recently that Pfizer has begun a new marketing campaign, blitzing the market with TV commercials for Rimadyl, and I wanted you to be aware of this. I want to thank all those visitors to srdogs who wrote to offer sympathy and support. My vets and Pfizer still try to defend themselves, but my heart is broken. All I want is my Betsy back. Pfizer paid all of my expenses (totaling $800.00) with no questions asked. Unfortunately, this is not a remedy to the situation. Sincerely, Tom Adams |

helppuppies.com Aims to Stop Internet Auctioning of Puppies....You Can Help
| We were encouraged when we visited a site called helppuppies.com, that aims to stop the auctioning of puppies via the Internet. According to the site, "The Internet is becoming saturated with Web sites that allow people to auction animals to the highest bidder or peddle them to the first person willing to pay the asking price." To find out more about how you can help stop this trend, please visit the helppuppies site. |

Schnitz, a Precious Package of Sunshine
We think you'll enjoy reading one of the recent contributions to the "Senior Dogs in Real Life" segment of the srdogs site. It's about "Schnitz," an eight-year-old Jack Russell/Sheltie mix. Here are excerpts from the story: "In 1996, my husband, Rusty, and I went to our local shelter, the York County SPCA (Thomasville, Pennsylvania), to adopt our first dog. ... Rusty pointed out a sweet little Jack Russell/Sheltie mix who sat quietly in his cage. ... "When we were told that Schnitz was 8 years old, I hesitated. I remember saying, 'But he won't have very long to live!' My sister-in-law, Tina, made her point rather succinctly when she replied, 'Well, he will die a lot sooner if he isn't adopted.' Little Miss Cookie
San Francisco, CA -- Staff at the city shelter called us last week to tell us about Cookie, a very sweet 10-year-old Cocker Spaniel, who was not going to be put up for adoption because official city guidelines wouldn't permit it. The reasons: she has dry eye and requires daily eye medication. In addition, the dry eye was left untreated for quite some time and, as a result, Cookie's eyesight is impaired. Cookie was due to be euthanized on Monday, October 29, but her ad on the srdogs site came to the attention of Northern California Cocker Spaniel Rescue. Sarah Ramm, the Senior Dogs Project's faithful volunteer, sprung Cookie from the shelter and transported her on Sunday, the day before her date for euthanasia, to the home of Karon Raffee of No. CA Cocker Rescue. Cookie now awaits adoption. If you'd like to consider offering her a permanent home, please E-mail: cookie@srdogs.com. |
