Rescue Groups and Senior-friendly Shelters

Following are some of the many organizations that prepare all ages of dogs for successful adoption into a new home. Those listed here, although they don't specialize in helping senior dogs, won't automatically turn them away and, in fact, have a good track record of trying their best to adopt out seniors. The list is updated from time to time, but the rescue world changes frequently (along with increasingly positive attitudes toward the potential for adoption of senior dogs!).

ALABAMA

SOS Animal Shelter, East Enterprise, AL

Two by Two Rescue, Birmingham, AL, is an all volunteer organization. We receive no state funding or other assistance, all expenses are covered by donations, adoption fees and our own pockets. Our goal is to help animals in need until they can find their forever homes. All animals, if old enough, are spayed/ neutered, up to date on vaccinations, placed on heartworm prevention, treated for heartworms if positive, and socialized. We have very limited space, and we must keep the limited space we have available for animals in need. We are always looking for FOSTER HOMES so we can save more animals.

Homeward Bound provides each pet with veterinary care as appropriate.  All animals are spayed or neutered, updated on their shots, microchipped, dewormed and have a health check before being released for adoption. We are a 501 (3)c non-profit organization and are always glad to accept donations to help us provide the best care for the dogs we take in as our adoption fees do not cover all medical care we provide for our dogs. All our dogs are housed in foster homes to keep them connected to family life instead of kenneled. We do not euthanize dogs based on age and will work hard to correct behavior problems of all animals we get in. We offer post adoption support to ensure the success of every family and pet.

Alaska Dog & Puppy Rescue was originally formed as a Rescue organization to help meet the needs of the Mat-Su Valley and its pet over population problems. The dogs and puppies taken in were literally saved from certain death and ADPR formed to help save their lives. Since its beginning in 2003, ADPR has rescued and placed over 1000 dogs a year. As an all-volunteer organization it hasn't been easy but thanks to hundreds of dedicated and compassionate volunteers ADPR has continued to grow and succeed. We strive to be advocates for dogs in our community and elsewhere and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. It is our goal to be an asset not only to our rescued dogs and puppies but also to our community.

As the organization grew, so also did our ability to help other dogs in need. Today, we rescue all types of small dogs, from 6 weeks to 16 years! All of our dogs live in foster homes while awaiting adoption. There they are given the love and support they need to transition into their forever homes.

"We also rescue dogs who are at the greatest risk of euthanasia in the shelters due to medical issues, both physical and emotional. While some of these dogs continue on to being adopted, many remain with us as foster/hospice, or fospice dogs… beloved dogs who need care and compassion at the end of their lives."

Petaluma, CA -- North Bay Canine Rescue

Dogs rescued by North Bay are spayed and neutered prior to placement and are placed only after home checks, medical evaluations, vaccinations, "return to rescue" agreements, contracts, and adoption fees. Dogs are fostered in a home environment, rather than a kennel, if at all possible. This group takes pride in their promise that, ". . . at any time and for any reason in the dog's life, if the need arises, he or she has a safe place with us ('return to rescue' policy)."

We advocate responsible pet guardianship, fight discrimination and dedicate ourselves to educating our communities in order to achieve our goal of a compassionate future for all life. Wagging Dog Rescue is a grassroots nonprofit that champions the rights of animals worldwide and works to create a better future for all lives. We rescue orphaned dogs from shelters and streets in SoCal and ’round the globe who have no other options and are at risk of euthanasia or worse, who may need medical care or rehabilitation, and who will one day be restored to their rightful place as a cherished family member. We advocate responsible pet guardianship, stand against discrimination – in all forms – and dedicate ourselves to educating our communities in order to achieve our goal of a more compassionate future. WDR came about in November 2011 after our Founder, Cassandra, spent some time volunteering at her local municipal animal shelter. Finding the volunteer program to be inefficient and seeing too many good family pets put down simply because of a lack of options when the shelter ran out of kennel space, she resolved to focus her energy on saving as many dogs as possible, one dog at a time. Euthanasia is not an acceptable form of population control. Cassandra began to recruit like-minded people to her cause, and Wagging Dog Rescue was born. E-mail: info@waggingdog.org.

Hedgesville Hounds Metropolitan Washington, DC Area. The Hedgesville Hound group was formally established in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) organization comprising people who, combined, have several decades of experience. Together we placed more than 120 wonderful dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes in wonderful homes across the Maryland and D.C. Metropolitan area in 2006. "Hedgesville Hounds" exist everywhere. They are dogs of every breed, every size, and every age who by circumstance, ignorance, or cruelty and neglect, were put at risk. Sometimes they are cats, and even rabbits. Our effort has been quite simple: to give them a voice. And a little help with arrangements. And then let these wonderful creatures do the rest.

Homeless Animal Rescue Team, Northern Virginia/Washington DC
A volunteer from HART writes: "We are a group that prowls the area shelters, accepts owner surrenders, strays, etc., and places every dog eventually. As of October 2000, we had already doubled our 1999 placement of 500 dogs. We accept puppies and very young dogs into our program, but the majority of our dogs are older. We try to take as many as possible from the shelters, as their short time has run out. Like most rescue groups, we struggle to raise enough funds and awareness to get our work done."

Humane Rescue Alliance, Washington, DC   In 2016 the Humane Rescue Alliance was established by the historic merger of two iconic animal welfare organizations: the Washington Humane Society (WHS) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL).  Both organizations have more than a century of experience protecting, rescuing, and caring for animals in the District of Columbia. WHS was established in 1870 as the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States while WARL, founded in 1914, operated the first animal shelter in the nation’s capital. Over the decades, thousands of animals—and people—have benefited from WHS and WARL programs and services.

Pet Rescue By Judy  Pet Rescue By Judy is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue of cats and dogs. Our Shelter is located at 401 South Laurel Ave. Sanford, FL, 32773. Many of our animals come to us with medical needs. They are doctored to the best of our ability and resources. It is our heartfelt desire to prevent any animal from the need to be "rescued." With that vision in mind, we take a three-prong approach through the education of pet owners and the general public about: proper care of animals, including correct diet of good quality food, fresh clean water, daily exercise, and lots of love; spaying and neutering companion animals (dogs and cats) in order to prevent euthanasia and over-population; low-cost spay/neuter clinics and wellness centers in local communities. We offer a Senior for Senior reduced adoption donation of 50% of the required donation on all adoptions for seniors 55 and older. Our shelter is located at 401 South Laurel Ave., Sanford, FL 32773. MINNESOTA

Home for Life, Stillwater, MN
In the world of animal welfare as it has always existed, there are two doors through which any shelter or rescue animal will eventually pass:  Door Number One is adoption.  Door Number Two is euthanasia.  Now, thanks to Home for Life's® visionary efforts, another option exists: The Third Door®. The care-for-life sanctuary.  At the time of our founding in 1997, contrary to current practice, we opened our doors to the animals deemed to have little or nothing to offer people. Today, we still welcome cats who are feral, or who test positive for leukemia. We welcome dogs even when they are unsociable or incontinent. We help animals from across the country - and the world - and will not turn an animal away just because it is old or disabled. Home for Life® can provide secure, loving, high-quality care for life for these animals, thanks to supporters like you!

SAINTS exists to help senior and special needs animals when all else fails. If we can, in time, find them a special home of their own, then we do. If that very special home never comes, they will be safe and cherished until the end of their days. We pledge to love them, to care for them, and make their dreams come true. We promise each of them that they will never be alone again..."
